Therapy Dog Preparation

Therapy dog training is a long and rewarding process. Here at NW Confident Canines LLC we treat a therapy dog as intimately as training up a service canine. The largest difference is that a therapy dog is being trained to benefit all people verses just benefiting their handlers needs.
We have successfully trained, picked, and guided clients to get their dogs certified. Unlike a service dog where there is no “Certification”, Therapy dogs are skilled trained canines that require being certified by an accredited Therapy dog organization.

HERE ARE A FEW:

  • Alliance of Therapy Dogs (formerly Therapy Dogs, Inc.)
  • Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs
  • Love on a Leash
  • Pet Partners (previously Delta Society)
  • Therapy Dogs Incorporated (TD Inc.) – new name is Alliance of Therapy Dogs
  • Therapy Dogs International

Your service dog may also be a therapy dog, but they cannot be represented as a Therapy dog when working as a Service Dog, and vise versa.

Antoinette is currently working towards becoming a Certified Therapy Dog Evaluator as well. Stay tuned as we go through the long process.

Contact us today to see if your dog would do well as a Therapy Canine.

Service Dog Training

Finding a service dog is incredibly intimate, and should be an enjoyable process. We would be thrilled to help you take that next step.

IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF A DOG. HERE IS HOW WE CAN HELP:

  • THE BIG QUESTIONS - WHAT BREED? WHAT BREEDER?
    • We can match you to the perfect breed, and can help you find a healthy, temperamentally sound puppy.
  • DISCUSSING TASK EVALUATION
    • Figuring out what Tasks will match your specific needs.
  •  THE RAISING PROCESS
    • From start to finish. WE ARE THERE.

“IF YOU ALEADY HAVE A DOG” HERE IS JUST A GLIMPSE ON WHAT WE WILL WORK ON:

  • Public access training
  • Advanced obedience
  • Airports
  • Task assistance

TASKS

Here are some we can work on:

  • Retrievals. such as getting their gear, medication or water.
  • Psychiatric service dogs. Training a large variety of tasks. Behavior interruptions, deep pressure therapy, light pressure therapy, crowd control, blocking, and more.
  • Medical alerts.
  • Handlers must understand there is scientifically no guarantee for alerts other than diabetic alert. If a trainer promises they can train an alert besides blood sugar, that is a red flag. However, we have trained, and are optimistic about your dog’s success with low blood sugar, high blood sugar, high heart rate, high and low blood pressure.
  • Non-weight-bearing mobility assistance. Opening and closing doors, retrieving items, turning on and off lights, pushing handicap buttons, picking up leash when already attached to dog, and more.
  • Weight bearing mobility assistance. Forward momentum pull, counterbalance, bracing (case-by-case).

The ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) provides a very loose outline of how a service animal should be trained. To them, an assistance dog must only be under control, potty trained, and perform tasks.

To NW Confident Canines, that is the bare minimum. A team can, and should be so much more, let us help you get there.

We do not train for guide dogs.
